One of the Common Core Standards for seventh grade Language Arts Involves teaching students how to write Argumentative essays. Michael, Gonchar, an educational blogger for the New York Times, outlines step-by-step instructions for teachers and students, about how to go about doing persuasive writing. Gonchar emphasizes that evidenced-based persuasive writing exists in our everyday lives, for example: newspaper editorials. This blog guides students through editorial writing process from Brainstorming a topic to publishing their work. Matt Dais is a freelance contributor at Edutopia. In his blog entitled Common Core ELA Resources for Middle School Teachers, he talks about how many teachers are updating the existing curriculum for the Common Core. He provides some useful links to lessons that can assist teachers with Common – Core aligned Units. This blog is great for pre-service teachers of Language Arts and Reading. Many of the links gives access to free lesson plans with exciting activities that teachers can use in their lessons. As ELA teachers, we should strive to make students believe that “Reading is Life Work, not homework!” Ms. Warren, an ELA teacher lives by this motto as evidenced in her class blog. Ms. Warren uses blogging as an assessment tool in order to get students accustomed to thinking critically and encourages them to get into the habit of publishing their work.
